Here's a little project I was working on this fall.
My next door neighbor had a little area on his property next to mine that he wasn't using, and quite frankly, it looked like hell.
He told me I could do whatever I wanted with it.

So we mowed down the milkweeds and removed the chicken-wire from around the compost pile...

I removed the rotted tarp and did some more weed-whacking...

I dug in an old railroad tie as a little retaining wall and carved out a circular hole in the natural depression...
DSCF2970.JPG
I then added my own chicken-wire fence and some other "accessories". I also bought a little kiddie pool and used it as a concrete mould...

Add a little pea-gravel, and I think you can see where I'm going with this...

Spike loves his new pen.

THE FINISHED PROJECT: Just in time for winter!

(I put the kiddie pool back in to keep the leaves and snow out until spring)

Actually, I do fill it with warm water.

Not many hawks here, but Bald Eagles could be a problem.
He keeps a wary eye on the sky and runs for cover if anything spooks him. That's why I made so many little caves for him to hide in.

Bonus footage:

Notice how he follows me as I walk around the pool
(At 1:22 you can see him swimming underwater)

STU, ever attend the Renaissance Festival? I've attended the one here near Houston, Texas since 1988. That helmet with it's outfit would work well.

Not that Spike would like it, but you could always add a corrugated steel cover over the pool for air predators, but it would cut out the sun rays.
