Software mode has damage flash, too... In fact, it's been awhile, but I think it was worse, with Software mode...
The reason Minigun is so blinding, is due to the frequency of hits versus the fade out of the damage flash... Meaning the damage flash doesn't get a chance to fade out before the next hit... Any other weapon, chaingun included, would strobe, at it's worst... Thus you'd still be able to see something every other frame, maybe... But minigun might as well be shooting sporks directly at your eyeballs, because the first hit reaches max intensify and the second hit arrives before you've recovered.
If we don't reduce damage flash from 75% to 50% across the board, we should at least reduce it for $minigundamagetype.

Even back in 2001 a 17" CRT was like 400 bucks.

I used to run two at a time. I really want a new damage flash though. If someone has one that would be sweet to post a link to.
